Otton III &
Sylvestre II
|
In the year 1,000
lived two extraordinary men: Emperor Otton III and the Pope Sylvester II.
The Pope, whose official name was Gerbert, was the son of peasants or shepherds. He had been noticed for his intellectual gifts and thus sent to study, first with the monks of Aurillac in Auvergne; later in Spain and in Reims. First appointed Archbishop of Reims, he was elected Pope -as Sylvester II- in 999. |
